Going to Greece was a dream come true. Since I learned about the history in School I had wanted to travel there. I didn’t imagine however, that my entire trip would revolve around food. Before the trip, I was actually concerned as I thought most places would serve meat or fish and there wouldn’t be many choices for me. I shouldn’t have worried…
During my week in the country I visited Athens as well as the Island of Syros. For some meals, I went to a supermarket and bought fresh vegetables, olives and bread. For most of my meals I went to a restaurant, I was in a group of five, and each time, we ordered a collection of small dishes to share. Even after five days of eating the same food it was delicious. It’s worth noting, that most places specify they cook their food in vegetable oil, as opposed to butter.
So if you’re wondering what can a vegan person order in a traditional Greek eatery, here is my favourites list (make sure you clarify you want your plates without the feta!)
- Greek Salad. I promise you, Cucumbers have so much more taste than they do in the UK
- Hummus with Pitta Bread
- Fava Beans in tomato sauce
- Stuffed Tomatoes and Peppers
- Courgette anything…
- Grilled or fried aubergines
- Lentil Salad
- Stuffed Vines
There are so many restaurants that will serve authentic and good food. But if you want some specific names, here are a few that stood out for me!
In Syros Island
- Dyo Tzitzikia Sta Armyrikia
- AEPIKO
- Thalasa Cafe – head over for your morning Frappe
- Laoutari kafreneio
In Athens
- Scholarchio
- Yiasemi – Head over for a breakfast buffet
